"Set apart for me Barnabas and Saul for the work to which I have called them." (Acts 13:2)
The Holy Spirit spoke while the church at Antioch was worshiping and fasting. And the instruction was specific: these two, for this work.
The church fasted, prayed, laid hands on them, and sent them.
What I keep noticing is that Paul and Barnabas weren’t launched from a headquarters. They were sent from a church. A community. People who knew them, had worshiped alongside them, had fasted for them. The mission was embedded in relationship from the start.
There’s something about that model that gets lost when we treat calling as something between an individual and God alone. Calling gets confirmed in community. It gets tested in community. It gets sent from community. Paul’s most important work began with people who knew him well enough to fast and pray over him before he left.
Being known in a community isn’t a preliminary step before real ministry begins. It’s part of how the ministry becomes real.
