Acts 12

Praying for What You Don't Expect God to Do

"You're out of your mind," they told her. (Acts 12:15)

The church was praying for Peter while he was in prison. Praying hard enough that people were gathered together in the middle of the night doing it. And when Peter actually showed up at the door, they told Rhoda she was out of her mind. Then they said it must be his angel.

They were praying for his release and didn’t believe it when it happened.

That’s one of the most honest moments in Acts. Not because they were faithless people. Because they were human people. Praying with urgency and simultaneously not quite expecting God to answer that specifically.

I find that more comforting than I probably should. Because I’ve prayed for things I half-believed God would actually do. Prayed with enough hope to keep going but not quite enough to be unsurprised by the answer. And God answered anyway.

The prayer still mattered. The gathering still mattered. God didn’t require their certainty before He moved. He just required them to keep showing up to the door and knocking.

Where are you praying for something you haven’t quite let yourself believe God will actually do?
